Route Notes Mt. Khumjung Himal Expedition led by Peter Athans, Spring 2007 - 20 April 2007 (The mountain is 6759m high in Mustang's Damodar Himal) The two-man team's start and their progress after that were slowed by two snowstorms and Athan's other objectives including a film project besides this climb, plus the late arrival of their horsemen at Tange. From Jomsom, the team went north-northeast to Kagbeni, Geling, Ghani Chharang (aka Tsarang) and De; from De, east, south and west to Tange Khola, at the confluence of Tange Khola and Chame Khola; base camp was just into the Chame Valley and south of Chame Khola. From here they could just see the top half of Mt. Khumjung (called Khumjungar on the HMG map) and hills northwest of the mountain. It was a very wild area visited only by goat herders; no one was living there. They realized that they had come too early in the spring to be able to proceed to Khumjung because of deep snow. Also, just two climbers with no Sherpas was too small a team. Furthermore, Athans had to meet a trekking group in Kathmandu to lead them in Khumbu. They did not get to their mountain -- did no climbing at all. Athans said he wanted to return in the autumn with more time and more men. This trip was purely a reconnaissance.
