Route Notes Made try for summit on 9th May by Scherzer and Brill. Got to 6200m when hard ice began. This ice continued for at least 500m and had no chance to go to top because would then a week to prepare route's fixed ropes and had insufficient equipment for this. Would have needed big team cutting steps in tedious hour after hour and risk of freezing toes standing in small cut steps. Lot of avalanches between BC and C1. Huge avalanche 2 meters from 2 members. Not so steep but very hard ice. A lot of equipment and clothing stolen by yak herders from C1. Police recovered almost all of it after a week. One serious altitude illness and one minor injury in small fall. Scherzer in conversation with EAH states that there is no N Ridge. Previous expeditions climbed W Face to NW Ridge (1955, 1982, 1983). Probably German 1978 and Japanese 1980 were on NW Ridge instead of NE Ridge [only Germans 1978 on NW Ridge, Japanese on (E)NE Ridge].
