Route Notes BC at Meta village C1 on SW Face C2 on SW Face High pt at 6700m on West Ridge. Project Himalaya/Altitude Junkies Kang Guru Expedition - 13 Nov 2008 BC was established at Meta village because no one wanted to used the normal BC site where avalanching killed 18 people with the French expedition of autumn 2005. C1 was 30-45 minutes climb above the old BC and was safe from avalanching if any occurred (none did while this team was on the mountain). The route had some very steep sections: as high as 70 degrees on the SW Face just below the West Ridge, and as high as 80 degrees in the couloir below C3. The couloir was "a very technical climb" on rock and ice, then deep soft snow on the ridge. Namgyal and Pasang Gombu reached 6900m on 3 November at the first summit. They descended to BC on the 4th after fierce winds destroyed three of the four tents at C3 (the tents were later replaced). The highest point reached by members was at the end of the fixed ropes at 6700m on the 8th. Adolfsson and Hyrylainen took seven hours to climb there from C3 as they made a bid for the summit with Namgyal and Pasang Gombu. Then they turned back when they saw a serious danger of slab avalanches above there. The team decided that day, 8 November, to abandon the climb because of the dangerous snow conditions high on the mountain. All members reached C3 during the course of the climb. Sherpas: Namgyal Sherpa, 5/10/77, Rakha, Khotang, Cho Oyu X4, Everest X4 Pasang Gombu, 28/12/69, Sotang, Solu, Everest X2
