Route Notes BC 30/10 5300m (Pumori South BC) HPt 01/11 5785m by Strang, Smithwick. On their approach to BC, the Smithwick took a helicopter from Lukla to Gorak Shep on 30/10 and walked directly to BC. He was acclimatised due to previous trips in the Indian Himalaya. Strang had been in the Khumbu for a week to acclimatize. They met in Gorak Shep. When Strang and Smithwick reached Pumori BC, they had a closer look at Kangri Shar as well as Chumbu and decided that both peaks were too dangerous to climb. Too much rockfall. They left BC and attempted to climb the North Face of Nirekha peak. “We walked scrambled to 5758 meters, watched the SE Face of Chumbu for two days, and decided that there was too much objective hazard. We then regrouped and climbed on the North Face of Nirekha, but no summit.” (Smithwick via FB messenger) Climb abandoned on 01/11 due to too much objective danger. Accidents: Strang got upper respiratory infection. Oxygen: Not taken, not used.
