| Route Notes | BC at Pangpema river ABC at end of Pangpema Glacier C2 on North Face C3 on North Face C4 on North Ridge. 1st summit bid to 7300m late (route North Face to 7300m) on 27th Sept by Lee Gil-Yeol and Lee In and bad weather coming, so BC (Lim) told them to descend. They reached 7300m and snow avalanche hit them, Ang Dawa Tamang and Kazi and carried three men down 400m - down to C3 same day. Kazi broken knee; Lee In forearm hurt, Ang Dawa cut hand. 23 Sept to BC being carried down and now all members and Sherpas in BC now. Changed route because many avalanches and waterfall in couloir. New route North Face to North Ridge to 7700m on ridge and 3 Oct make C4 on ridge at 7400m. Again too much snow and down to C2 on 5th Oct. 9th Oct C2 to C4: stayed in C4 till 11 Oct try for C5 top but stop at 7700m because strong wind, cloudy and too late to continue and slept in C4. 12 Oct down to C2 and 13 Oct to BC. 16 Oct up from BC to C2 and sleep there till 18th afternoon. Too much snow and arrived C1 in waist-deep snow; arrived at 9:00 pm after avalanche buried some people but not hurt: couldn't find tents snow at C1 so had to biv. 19th Oct arrived BC and climb finished. * Han killed 14 Sept by avalanche at 6600m and journalist with film team was killed in same avalanche. BC-Nepal-Mountaineering Korean Climber dead in avalanche Kathmandu, Sept 17 (Reuters) - A South Korean mountaineer was killed on Sept 14 by a snow avalanche while climbing the world's third highest mountain, Kangchenjunga, in the Nepalese Himalaya, according to an announcement from Nepal's tourism ministry. Han Do-Kyu, a 34-year-old iron factory technician from Kwangyang, died in the avalanche at 10:30 am on the 14th when he was climbing at an altitude of 6600m on the southern slopes of Kanchenjunga. Kangchenjunga which is on Nepal's eastern border with India, is 8586 meters high. Another member of the '99 Korea Kangchenjunga Expedition, Kim Jong-Hwan, a Korean Broadcasting System television cameraman, was injured by the same avalanche, the ministry said. Kim was brought by helicopter from base camp to hospital in Kathmandu on Sept 15, the ministry said. He is 42 years old and is from Kwangmyong. Han was married with one son and one daughter. He was only the second Korean to die while climbing Kangchenjunga. The climbing team is lead by Lim Hyung-Chil from Kwangju, while television film team's leader is Kim Sung-Hwan from Seoul. YK Joung (Korean embassy) - 18 Sept 99 KBS's Kim broke his hip and is in Teaching Hospital - home after few days? Another KBS man died on 14 Sept: Hyun Myeong-Kun, born 1968, in Seoul, KBS reporter on trekking permit to visit BC and not an experienced climber. Went up from BC after hearing news of avalanche. He died of altitude sickness same day his body also brought to KTM. YK Joung - 7 Nov 99 Hyun actually had been climbing with Han on 14 Sept and was killed by same avalanche. Had no permission from HMG or his leader to go above BC. He was married and wife pregnant. |
