| Route Notes | Catherine Vuillez and Margareta Morin were Peak 15 Adventure clients on the Elite and SST permits. Adrian Hayes - 15 May 2025 Approach: By plane to Bhadrapur, jeep to Lelep via Taplejung, trekked to BC via Pangpema and passes BC 21/04 5500m C1 -- C2 02/05 6200m C3 04/05 6750m (at lower C3) C4 09/05 7200m (at lower C4) Smt 10/05 by Hayes and Sherpa at 2:30 pm Hayes did some trekking in the Kangchenjunga region to get acclimatized, to northern BC and passes in between base camps. Didn’t reach the summit the previous year and wanted to give it another try. First rotation to C1 on 26/04, touched C1 and back to BC. Second rotation on 02/05, to C1 and on to C2. On 03/05 rest day at C2. On 04/05 to C3. Hayes and Sherpa set off from lower C4 for the summit at 6:30 pm on 09/05. Ascent in a group of climbers through deep snow, Hayes was walking towards the back of the group. At some point the Sherpas in the front breaking trail grew tired and stopped. A few clients went first and took turns breaking trail. Hayes on the summit at 2:30 pm, there was a whiteout, no views, it was windy and cold. Stayed on the summit for 10 minutes. Coming down from the summit, maybe after 10 minutes, Hayes was pushed off a rock edge by another climber and sprained his wrist of the right hand in the fall. His hand was in pain and out of action for the descent, couldn’t hold the rope anymore and had to do the rappels with one hand only. Hayes and Sherpa fell well behind the rest of the group. At some point Hayes must have run out of oxygen and started to act strangely, he began to hallucinate, “possibly a bit of HACE crept in”. The next thing Hayes remembers is waking up lying on the side at 1:30 am on 11/05, alone, somewhere at 8200-8300m. He tried to attract attention, flashed his light, and continued the descent on his own. At some point he stopped and fell asleep again. He woke up when he heard someone shouting. Jangbu Sherpa Pane had seen the flashing light from C4 and came up to help him. He reached Hayes’ location at midnight at 7800-7900m, gave him supplemental oxygen and together they descended to C4. Arrival at C4 at 1 am on 12/05. He probably saved Hayes’ life. Same day Hayes with Koching Sherpa and Jangbu down to C2. On 13/05 by helicopter from C2 to BC and on to Kathmandu to CIWEC hospital. Oxygen: Taken and used by Sherpa from C4 to summit and down to a little above 8000m, by member from C4 to summit and on descent to a little above 8000m, and again on descent from 7800-7900m to C4. Accidents: Hayes had 3-4 degree frostbite all toes and fingers, right wrist heavily bruised. Uta Ibrahimi - 15 May 2025 Approach: Flight to Bhadrapur, Jeep to Yamphudin, trekked to BC. BC 21/04 5600m C1 -- C2 02/05 6250m C3 08/05 6800m (lower C3) C4 09/05 7200m (lower C4) Smt 10/05 by Ibrahimi and Sherpa at 2 pm Lakpa Temba Sherpa fixed last 300m of ropes to the summit. Uta and Lakpa were the first to summit. Weather was beautiful during ascent, but cloudy on the summit and snowing. Set off for the summit from lower C4 at 6:50 pm on 09/05. Stayed on the top for 20 minutes, lots of traffic and they wanted to get down fast. Not much to see anyway as it was cloudy. Back to lower C4 at 7 pm. Next day to BC at 3 pm. Very bad conditions on the way down, snow was very slushy, difficult. Descent harder than ascent. They were tired after breaking trail and because of snow conditions. Uta saw deceased Margarita Morin about 1 hour below the summit, looking very exhausted. Returned to KTM on 14/05 by heli to Tapetok, from Bhadrapur by plane. Hired: Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Makalu, DOB 14/05/1985 Oxygen: Taken and used from C4 to summit and down to C4 by Ibrahimi and Sherpa Records: Ibrahimi completed her 14x8000m quest. Emma Oestergaard - 21 May 2025 Approach: Flight to Bhadrapur, 2-days jeep drive, 2-days trekking to Tseram, by heli from Tseram to BC. BC 21/04 5486m C1 -- C2 02/05 6227m C3 04/05 6750m (lower C3) C4 17/05 7350m (higher C4) Smt 18/05 by Oestergaard and Sherpa at 6 am. Oxygen: Taken and used from C4 to summit and down to C3 by member; from C4 to summit and down to C4 by Sherpa. Oestergaard did some acclimatization in the Khumbu before joining the expedition. First rotation on 26/04 to C1. Second rotation on 02/05 to C2. Set off from C4 for the summit at 9:45 pm on 17/05. On summit at 6 am. On the summit for 30 minutes, beautiful weather, no wind, clear skies, quite warm. One hour traffic jam on the way up before the couloir. Down to C4 for some rest and on to C2 at 5 pm. Next day to BC. Helicopter out to KTM via Tseram and Tapetok on 19/05. According to Oestergaard, Margareta Morin died in couloir at about 8000m on the way down after summit. Sherpa stayed with her until last breath, apparently Morin died of exhaustion. Hired: Pasang Tenji Sherpa (S) Returned KTM on 21/05 by heli from Tapetok to KTM |
