Route Notes BC 03 Apr 5500m C1 25 Apr 6200m C2 26 Apr 6500m C3 04 May 7000m C4 19 May 7460m Smt 20 May by Kiss, Eross at 6 pm. Summit team left C4 at 6 pm. Straightforward climb, but slow due to climbing without supplementary oxygen and Eross' handicap (prosthesis on right leg). Weather was good. They were climbing with other members of Seven Summit Treks. They only spent about 15 minutes on the summit as they were late. At about 8 pm Eross contacted base camp and told them that Kiss had already gone down and that he was on his own and exhausted. He sat down and tried to take something out of his rucksack and it tumbled down. He rested just below the summit for about three hours. He then radioed again and told BC that he was continuing down. The last radio contact with Eross was at 3 pm on 21 May. Eross must have been at about 8300m and probably died of exhaustion. Kiss must have gone back up for 200m to look for Eross in the night and must have fallen to his death at about 8200m in the couloirs. BC had no radio contact with him as he had switched off his radio. There was nothing Dutka and Kollar could do at BC during the night. When Kim Hong-Bin from South Korea came down, he showed them a picture of a dead body and they identified that it was Kiss. Dutka reached C3 on 4 May on acclimatization rotation. He did not join the summit attempt as he was feeling sick. Kollar was BC manager and never intended to climb. Oxygen: Not taken, not used
