Route Notes Stangl approached the mountain from sea level. He arrived in Kathmandu in late February, left on 5 March for Calcutta, travelled down the beach of the Indian Ocean to a vacation resort, Digha. This was his starting point for Kangchenjunga, and from here he moved on foot and by Indian bicycle through the Indian state of West Bengal, then north in Nepal to Taplejung, with a friend, Chris Schmid. At Taplejung, his friend turned back, but here Stangl met the Russian Kangchenjunga team led by Alexei Bolotov. With one of its members, Nikolai Totmyanin, Stangl trekked to BC, where they arrived on 7 April. Stangl climbed Kangchenjunga independently of others on the same permit. He skipped C2 as he progressed up the mountain in April, but he summited on 20 May in the company of Mario Panzeri (Spanish) and Tunc Findik (Turkish) at about 7:30 am in "perfect" weather. He had left C4 at 10:00 pm the night before and returned there about noon to spend the night. About C4: Stangl stayed in the C4 tent of Mario Panzeri during the night of 18th, then on the 19th he descended to C3 to get his own tent, took it back up to C4, and rested in it for a while before going up to the summit on the 20th and returning to it to spend that night.
