Route Notes BC same as Koreans, Indians, Swiss C1 same as British and all others C3 above Great Shelf High point at snow slope above Great Shelf. Climbed with Joos to C2 once (on 17 May), but otherwise climbed on his own with his Sherpa Pasang only to C1. 26 May left BC and slept at C2 (now no one else on mountain): 27th to C3; 28th up (now above clouds) hoping and wishing to go to top but know it was a long shot, that he would get worn out before top and did get tired and worried about avalanche danger so only to 7900m. Slept on 28th at C2 and late night 29th at BC (Pasang had taken down tent at C1). On 29th snow bridge collapsed under him and he whacked his elbow and aggravated old bone injury from 3 years ago. When he was climbing above 7600m he was above the clouds below which meant snowfall and when he descended below 7600m, the avalanche danger was greater than above and there were small avalanches falling as he went down.
