| Route Notes | High point on East Face couloir. On their approach to the mountain, the two man team crossed the Mera La and went east to the Hunku Valley and north up the valley to BC at 4850m. They decided they would attempt the east side of Hunku and thought there would be a good line up a big couloir in the middle of the East Face. On 24 October they bivouacked at 5200m and next day started their attempt on the couloir. They managed to reach 5600m in the couloir, but deep sugar snow meant they could not get any traction; it was impossible to make any substantial progress. Furthermore these were very cold days: 5 degrees centigrade in the morning to minus ten degrees at night. They abandoned the climb on its first day. The sugar snow plus the cold sent them down. The 25th was a long day: they left their bivouac that morning at 4:30 and got down to BC at 3:30 that afternoon. |
