| Route Notes | Rope-fixing team summited on 25 Oct at 15:10: Tshering Pemba Sherpa (from 8K) Pemba Rita Sherpa (from 8K) Dawa Wongchu Sherpa (from 8K) Ashok Lama (from 8K) Karma Sherpa (from Kobler) 3 Sherpas (from Thamserku) From Brazilian website report: November 4th – summit! Maria Tereza Ulbrich summited the Himlung today! Luis Cavalieri also tried, but returned due to strong winds. We still don't have more complete information about it. Along with her, 3 more Icelanders and 5 Sherpas reached the summit. With these peaks, the Himlung season ended with very few peaks! In one of the toughest seasons in the mountain's recent history. Luis is on his way to Kathmandu. He must return to Brazil the day after tomorrow! Maria Tereza should stay in Nepal until December. After success on the mountain she will stay to guide the trekking to Everest base camp. Maria Tereza Ulbrich, still little known in mountaineering, has an enviable curriculum in mountaineering, having climbed 23 mountains above 6000 meters, in addition to several other classics in just 7 years dedicated to the sport. This was his second mountain in Nepal, but the first above 7000 meters. October 31st – Solitaire at Base Cam Since the summit of Pedro Hauck and Thiago Melo, no one else has reached the top of the mountain this season. In fact, that was the only summit so far! Some agencies have already abandoned attempts, such as the Swiss Kobler and the Himalaya Glacier. Maria Tereza and Luís Cavalieri wait for the winds to reduce their strength to try the summit. Tomorrow they will remain at the base, but on the 2nd they start to climb to try their luck on the 4th of November. October 30th – Part of the team arrives in Kathmandu After 4 days of trails, jeep and road, Pedro Hauck, Thiago Melo, Marlus Jungton and Silvio Gastaldi return to Kathmandu. Maria Tereza and Luis Cavalieri remain at base camp awaiting a second window of good weather. So far it has been quite windy in the upper part of the Himlung, which has prevented any other expeditions from going to the summit. October 25th – Summit in the Himlung Himal After the weather conditions improved, the Brazilian team invested in another acclimatization cycle, in which they went to Camp 2 at an altitude of 6070 meters. They returned to sleep at Camp 1 and then climbed back up to Camp 2. This is a common acclimatization practice used in high altitude mountains to get the body used to the thin air. Taking advantage of the snowless days, expedition leader Pedro Hauck and mountaineer Thiago Mello decided to make a first attempt at the summit. It was a long climb up to 7126 meters of altitude, with very cold and wind in the high regions. However, they were the first climbers to reach the top this season, along with the Sherpas. Before going down, the Sherpas team fixed some ropes to facilitate the ascent of the next team that will take place on 11/01. Hauck and Mello head to base camp where they will meet the rest of the team and help prepare the next assault on the mountain. October 20th - Snow at Base Camp On Sunday the Brazilian team participated in a de puja ceremony. A traditional celebration in Nepal to ask the Gods for permission and protection before climbing a mountain. Then they completed the first acclimatization cycle. The team went up to Camp 1 carrying equipment and returned to base. But the weather changed, it snowed a lot in the region. So they decided to wait at base camp until the weather improved. Starting tomorrow they returned for the second acclimatization cycle. They will go up to Camp 2 and back, and then go to the last acclimatization cycle. October 14 - Arrival at Himlung Base Camp After a few more kilometers of walking, the team arrived at the Himlung Base Camp . They are already well settled and said they are eating well. Everyone is well. |
