Route Notes On 18th of October: the pair acclimatized on Saribung, reaching the top at 11 am. Previously on the same day, the approach on the moraine to reach the glacier was very long. Both skied down from the summit in 40 cms of goblets snow. On 26th of October: the pair left with its Sherpa for the summit. All the night was very strong, then the team waited for the sun to warm a bit. With less wind, the team started at 7 am. (The same day a German team summited at 4 pm and went back around midnight at C3). That morning day temperature measured at BC was -17 degrees C: at 6300m at C3 it was for sure -25 degrees C. The wind blowing strongly and continuously during the night decreased during the morning, was like 35 to 40 km/h maximum gust of wind during the final part of the ascent. Fixed rope and Oxygen: The team didn't use oxygen (they didn't have an hyperbaric chamber) and did not fix rope at all (they didn't have it as well). The day after their ascent, the Sherpas of the Japanese team installed fixed rope from C3 to the summit. Route and summit description: The route would get the notation easy in classical European notation. Technically, only one section consisting in 3 meters of steep ice (55 degrees) in the glacier between C1 and C2. And last 50 meters below summit are a bit steep. Apart from this, this is a long route mostly dangerous because exposed to the high and cold winds, what would be apparently the meaning of "Himlung Mountain of the Wind." Summit areas sizes like 5 to 7 meters large and 10 meters long. Accidents, etc: One French guy contracted frostbite on the fingers the summit day of Saribung and was rescued by helicopter. During the Himlung expedition 3 Japanese were rescued by helicopter (one for lung edema, 2 others for serious frostbites of fingers). Sherpa: Ngima Sherpa, 2 Dec 1972, Sikli, Jubing-9, Solu, Cho Oyu X5, Everest X3 On 20th of October one Austrian man (Bertram Klehenz) and one Sherpa claimed to have reached the summit. On 26th of October the only practicable route leading to the summit obliged Audisio to break a cornice far on the right side of it (southwest direction from the summit; the trio used the rope for safety); the question is that the cornice was obviously nowhere broken and that there were absolutely no footprints on the summit.
