Route Notes The expedition reached the mountain by bus to Besisahar on 6 October then trekked up the Marshyangdi River to Nar Khola and Phu Khola to Phu village, and finally east from Phu some distance to their BC site, which they reached on 14 October. The team placed their C2 and C3 at 6200m and 6400m respectively, only 200 vertical meters apart, because of the long linear distance between them. From C3, six members and two Sherpas set out for the top at 6:30 am on 26 October. They were Abendroth, Boneff-Li, Klein, Koch, Schmidt and Seeliger, with Sherpas Lila and Jamba. They were on the summit at 2:30 pm, by which time the sky had become very cloudy, and were back in C3 at 6:30 pm. The expedition's leader, Knauthe, had also left for the top on the 26th, but he turned around at 7000m and returned to C3. He explained that he was too slow, too tired to continue towards the summit. All were back in BC on the 27th. Other non-summiting members: Feist reached C1 twice, but got not higher because he had the flu. Kaufmann also got no higher than C1, which he reached on 16 October. He had a chest infection and no motivation to continue the climb. He left BC on the 19th and went home. Kneist reached C1 twice and C2 once, but his case of flu caused him to stop climbing and remain in BC. Lechner got to C1, but lost all motivation to climb the mountain and left BC on 22 October with Wurst. Richter never reached BC. Wurst got to C1 once, but never slept there; she had a very bad cough and left the team with Lechner on 22 October. Sherpas: Jamba Sherpa, 18/5/79, Tapting, Solu, no 8000ers Lila Bahadur Tamang, 15/10/66 (1/3/2023), Sardikhola, Kaski, Everest X2, Cho Oyu X1, Makalu X1 Report from Knauthe (email to Billi) - 20 Feb 2013 Summit 26 Oct by Lila, Jamba Sherpa, Koch at 2 pm, Abendroth at 2:30 pm, Klein at 3 pm, Boneff-Li, Schmid and Seeliger at 5:30 pm. Summit team left C3 at 6 am. The weather was calm but cloudy. They spent an average of about half an hour on the summit and descended to C3, where the last people arrived at 9:30 pm. Kneist reached C2 on 20 Oct; he did not carry on due to a bad cough and exhaustion. Lechner reached C1 on 16 Oct; he did not carry on due to diarrhea and was not really that keen on the climb as his priority was the trek-in. Wurst reached C1 on 16 Oct; she had a bad cough and did not carry on. Kaufmann and Feist reached C1 on 16 Oct; they were both mentally exhausted and not ready to climb the mountain. Richter never got out of BC; he suffered from a stomach bug and was mentally not prepared for the mountain.
Accidents Several members' illnesses; Seeliger got slight frostbite on his fingertips and toes.
