Route Notes The team approached their mountain up the Tamur River to and up the Ghunsa Khola, northeast to Ghunsa village and Lhonak, then east to Pangpema. They made their BC at Pangpema (5100m) and their ABC at the southeast end (source) of the Kangchenjunga Glacier at 5100m. Their route from BC to ABC required them to lose altitude and then regain it. They made ABC on 18 November, and on the 20th they pitched C1 at the bottom of the South Face at 5950m. Their plan was to climb the face to its junction with the West Ridge at about 6700m and then to follow the ridge to the summit. However, the six climbers were stopped from going higher than 6000m on the 21st by deep snow on the ridge, which meant serious danger of avalanching. There had been heavy snowfall before they arrived at BC. During their brief climb, they had fine weather, but there was a strong wind blowing. They now retreated to C1 the same day and to BC on the 22nd. Their climb was over. They could not safely scale the West Ridge from its start because of loose rock and then the ridge became quite steep. Sherpa: Pasang Sherpa, (16/5/2039), Chheskam-3, Solu
