| Route Notes | The chief goals of the expedition were to finish establishing a Nepali-English library in the village of Chhele in Manang north of Kagbeni, and to continue their program of exploring caves of great archeological interest in the area as far north-northeast as Samajung village. They flew from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then to Jomsom, from where they began their exploration trek. They finished their work in Samajong on 2 August and retraced their route southwards with the plan to climb Gaugiri before returning to Kathmandu. But when they were near Chhele on 6 August, Richards fell while climbing a cliff and fractured his coccyx ("tailbone") which left him in great pain. All climbing plans were immediately cancelled to concentrate on his care. Segal accompanied him in his helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu the same day, and the rest of the team followed to Kathmandu two days later. |
