Route Notes Unauthorized attempt - HMG official said 26 June 91 no application submitted; German embassy paid fine for Seeba so he could leave Nepal quickly and HMG wrote to embassy about Bensch. Only information about this team came from Al Burgess, who wrote out the details of the accident and the sketch map of where it happened. However it is obvious from Burgess's account that the attempt to climb ended with this serious accident. Al Burgess - 8 May 91 Ganchempo Accident Around the 16 April 1991 2 Germans, Rainer Bensch and Harald Seeba attempted to climb the S Ridge of Ganchempo. At 5700m Seeba fell breaking both legs. Bensch returned to Kangyin on 17th April and radioed KTM for help. Asian Trekking sent 3 Sherpas. They climbed to Seeba but could not rescue him. On 23rd April Bensch returned again to Kangyin and met Al Burgess who radioed for 3 climbing Sherpas. On 25th? April Burgess, Bensch and 3 Sherpas and 5 local Langtang porters set up a Base Camp at 4700m on the southwest side of the peak on a glacial moraine. The Langtang men descended. On 27th they reached Seeba and brought him to a pass at 5500m. The following day they brought him to 4700m. Burgess returned to Kangyin to get a ladder (used as a stretcher) and 7 local porters. 2 days later they brought him to Kangyin. He flew out the next day to Ktm by helicopter.
