Korean Climber Dies By Elizabeth Hawley Kathmandu, Nov 14 (Reuters) - A South Korean mountaineerer fell to his death on November 8 while climbing in the Nepalese Himalaya, Nepal's tourism ministry announced today. The climber was a member of a nine-man South Korean expedition to a 7647 meter (25,089-foot) peak in the Annapurna massif; the peak is widely known as Fang but officially named Varaha Shikhar. According to the ministry's report, Kim Yea-Hoon, a 25-year-old employee of a mountaineering-equipment company, who lived in Kwangmyung, plunged 50 meters (165 feet) down Fang's slopes from an altitude of 7200 meters (about 23,600 ft) on November 8. He died from his injuries the next day. The expedition abandoned their attempt to scale Fang, the ministry, said because of the death of their teammate and are on their way back to Kathmandu. If they had been successful, they would have been the first Koreans to summit Fang and the first mountaineers from any nation to succeed in the autumn season. The mountain is considered to be very difficult to climb, and its summit has been reached only once, by an Austrian team in the spring of 1980 on an entirely different route from the Koreans eastern approach. Kim was unmarried. His team was led by Yu Jae-Hyung from Chuncheon. |
