| Route Notes | 4th May at 10:30-11:00 summit party set out for top: Athans, Crouse, Rhoads, Ervin-Rhoads, Nima Tashi, Chuwang Nima, Gyaltzen Dorje and Phu Tashi. At S Summit Rhoads and wife turned back at 11:00 am and Nima Tashi back from below Balcony earlier. Back at Col 4:00 pm and later and slept there. Next summit bid from Col at 10:20 pm of 17th: Corfield, Chuwang Nima (who had gone to BC and perhaps Thamo after 5 May), Nima Tashi, Dawa Sona and reached top 18th at 1:00 pm and slept at Col, where returned about 8:30 pm. No attempt on Lhotse: strength depleted: 2 Sherpas gone home, Everest took time, Nuptse climbed. GPS work: put in sensors at C2, C4, Bishop rock/ledge; activated GPS on top and South Col and much other work. Summit Sherpas: Phu Tashi, Pangboche, 26, his first 8000er Chuwang Nima, Thami, Everest summit 5 times before Dorje, Thamo, Everest 6 times before Gyalzen, Loding, Everest 3 times before Na Temba, Sikli, Everest 6 times before, Cho Oyu Nima Tashi, Pangboche, Everest 3 times before Dawa Sona, Pangboche, Everest 2 times before EverestNews.com - 15 June 1999 EverestNews was contacted by Jacek Maselko who summited on May 18 from the North. Maselko states that he summited at 13:30 NST and looked down the SE Ridge route to determine if anyone was coming up. He saw no tracks in ankle-deep snow leading to the summit. He said the weather was very calm and thus any tracks would not be obliterated by wind and snow. The Maselko group remained on the summit until 14:40 NST. Todd Burleson - 11 Oct 2001 Sherpas told Burleson that Corfield did not summit Everest. He got to top of Hillary Step and 200m linearly above and then so exhausted had to turn back. Sherpas definite that he stopped and Sherpas turned around with him. Willi Prittie - 6 Jun 2002 One of the Sherpas with Corfield on his summit attempt told Prittie on 5th June that Corfield and all three Sherpas with him did not go to the summit. Chuwang Nima Sherpa told Prittie that they had gotten "just above the Hillary Step" when Corfield became exhausted and all four men (Corfield, Chuwang Nima, Nima Tashi and Dawa Sona) turned back. |
