Route Notes C1 at North Col C2 slightly higher than some. Difficult summit attempt: 6 people, 3 nights at C2 (Anker, Hahn, Richards, Politz, Norton and Pollard) on 13, 14 and 15 May; then to C3 on 16th: Anker, Hahn, Richards and Norton slept in C3 with Dawa Nuru (Phortse) and Ang Pasang (Pangboche) who came up from North Col. 17th all 6 went to 8565m where concern about weather and speed of climb and oxygen available sent others down to C3 where Americans slept and Sherpas to ABC. Other 2 had deep snow and 5 inches new snow at 3rd Step and above which slowed progress: should have taken 2 hours from top of 2nd Step to summit but took 3-1/2 hours in knee-deep unconsolidated snow. Returned to C3 at 9:15 pm well after dark with 2 members having come up to meet them (didn't need help actually). Search for Mallory and Irvine took place below and to west of high camp; Mallory's body found on 30-degree slope.
Accidents Hoyland mini-stroke; Firstbrook not acclimatized and weak
