| Route Notes | BC at Rongbuk BC ABC at normal spot C1 at North Col camp (only Haston and wife slept there a few times) C2 no one slept there, tent used High point at 1st Step. On 16th May Arvis and Perler left ABC at 6:00 am NST and went to 7600m to make a camp on the same day. Hiroz, Roduit, Schaffter and Joos left ABC at 12:00. Also on the 16th May Buisson and Delale left ABC at 2:00 pm NST. Arvis and Perler left with 1 Sherpa and reached 7600m but did not go higher; they turned at 6:00 am NST; they just went up there to put up a tent. Arvis and Perler both used oxygen from the top of snow ridge (7300m). Hiroz went to 8000m and turned at 3:00 pm NST because she was not fast enough for alpine climb, too slow. Roduit went to 8500m alone and turned back at 4:00 am NST. He felt he was not strong enough to summit and come back alive. Schaffter turned back at 7500m at 10:00 pm NST. He also felt he was not fast enough for a 1-day push to the summit and back he does not like to sleep at camps. Joos turned back at 8000m for the same reason as Schaffter. Steve Haston and Laurence Goualt-Haston had reached the North Col and spent a few nights there on different occasions. They stayed on the mountain to climb when Schaffter, et al, left Base Camp on 24 May. * All climbing members on 17 May returned to ABC in the evening after the summit attempt. * Schaffter and Joos - felt the weather conditions for an alpine climb on 17 May were not good - it was too windy. They also felt their team was too weak to climb to the summit from ABC and was glad everyone turned back. * Schaffter does not like the climbing style of large commercial expeditions. He did not like being around large expeditions while trying to climb Everest alpine-style (going from ABC to the summit without sleeping at camps). * (Dave Hahn/Eric Simonson): The American Expedition felt that Schaffter's team were too inexperienced to attempt the North Ridge of Everest in alpine-style; in the event of an accident Schaffter's team would end up using oxygen, tents and Sherpas from other teams. Haston - 30 May 1999 (by phone): Haston made no further attempt for summit - only went up to clear tents at 7600m (on 25 May) at 7000m. |
