Route Notes C1 at North Col C2 never slept in (only for brief stage) C3 only for search for Debrouwer. High point just below First Step. Climbed mostly near Debrouwer and Garcia. 16 May Pascal started up for top from ABC at 5:00 am and joined Hubert and Joao at N Col 8:00 am and rested. Joao started up 7:30 am and Hubert and Pascal started from Col at 9:00 am and arrived at C2 2:30 pm and Joao had already left C2 with small tent and cooking gear to put at C3 with plan for Pascal and Hubert to come later. Pascal left C2 5:00 pm, but Hubert decided to stop (stomach trouble) and down to C1 and ABC 17 May. Pascal arrived at C3 on or before 10:00 pm and Joao there; they ate and had tea. They left C3 together and Joao faster than Pascal. Joao on top about 1:30-2:00 pm 17 May and Pascal just below top started to use oxygen (Joao no oxygen) and on top at 4:00 pm and both left top 4:30 pm (Joao had come down to look for Pascal and both to top together). Top of 2nd Step together and Pascal (still in oxygen) found route down Step at about 7:30-8:00 pm, just getting dark and they had no headlamp and no moonlight. After got to bottom of Step, Joao went ahead and biv top of First Step to wait for Pascal. Joao woke up about 5:00 am 18th no Pascal. Joao was near top of 1st Step and able to come to C3 and only now he used walkie-talkie to call other at about 8:00 am and said he would take water and oxygen from C3 up to Pole, but now Pawlowski, little below 1st Step, reported he shook Pascal and said was dead; besides Pawlowski had asked for rescue for himself. Pawlowski reached C3, when there were 2 of his Sherpas and Hubert urged Pawlowski to send them up to Pascal but they went down. Hubert convinced Joao to go down and he did; Joao alone without strength. Now Hubert asked Mondinelli to go up from C3 to with Sherpas to rescue Pascal and they did at 4:00-4:30 pm and just as they had stated, saw person getting up, trying to go down and finally falling long way. Joao arrived C2 5:00-7:00 pm and refused all help including oxygen and continued down. 10:00 pm Hubert asked Brazilians to search for Joao which Brazilian man did but no success. Both Brazilians up again and did find Joao below Col sleeping; now took him up to Col and took care of him there and next down to ABC on 19th. 24th May Hubert up from ABC to find body and also if possible to go to top but saw nothing. Slept at Col and up from Col at 7:00 am; reached C3 8:00 pm again searching for Pascal with Man Ram Tamang, cook who was with Hubert much of the time, taking oxygen. Found C3 tent and nothing in it, Hubert had taken only gas cartridge so was in trouble but made bid to wait for daylight and on up to search but without eating and drinking. Stopped search at about 8400m just below 1st Step at 9:00 am, now had to go down and arrived ABC, taking down C3 and C2 tents, etc and arrived ABC 4:00 pm. 27th to North Col to bring gear down. Hubert left with job of clearing camps; other members were either already gone or not real climbers. This was Hubert's 5th time on Everest and cannot come again till 2003 because of many projects already scheduled, but he needs Everest summit for his Third Pole - "its an easy mountain."
