| Route Notes | High point at North Col (C1 site). Calonica got bad stomach trouble in ABC; unable to eat and dehydrating and down to BC 17th and then up to ABC 22th, up to C1 site 24th and left gear and down to ABC. Snowfall started 25th and never able to push higher and Calonica left ABC only to leave mountain while Sherpas went to retrieve gear at N Col. They set off slab avalanche in descent and were sent down 30m; Keepa 6m and suffered rope burns on hand (about 30 Sept). Face too dangerous to attempt another bid: with snow continuing to fall, new slab avalanching likely. 14 Oct 98 - Simone Moro (Italian Ev N): Calonica not motivated to climb high, spends much time and attention to his daily website reports and lining up sponsors for future climbs. His ABC is an office where he works for hours. He goes now to Ama Dablam to get good pictures of himself. [He went to Ama Dablam BC but did no climbing, leader Henry Todd said]. |
