Route Notes BC at road - 1 camp before ABC: 5500m C1 at North Col High point at top of 2nd Step. After camp made at col tents down-faced, food destroyed, avalanches took out fixed ropes 4 times. Too much snow. Spent total 60 days in ABC. 9th Oct made 3rd summit bid (first 2 failed to pitch C4 because of wind and snow - 28th Aug and 15th Sept tried). 3rd bid on 9th Oct from C5 and got to 8800m in good weather; 13 Koreans, Indians and Sherpas got to this point, found only 3-4 feet of ladder left where as 8-9 feet gone. Started from C5 midnight of 8th/9th, reached 8750m at top of 2nd Step and found ladder part gone so turned back. Tried to make ladder with 25m of rope at hand. Did not go out onto face because there too would have need more rope and would have go down to 8500m and then traverse and again up, so not enough rope to rope up 13 people. Returned to C5 11 am and climb finished. Chatterjee stopped extra night in C4 because spectacles broken; at this time, without oxygen got frostbitten fingers here alone. Will return to Everest again. Korean Park Young-Seok said on 21 Oct 1995: Chatterjee failed because not technically skilled, waited for Sherpa Ngati to do things for him.
Accidents Chatterjee & Ngati frostbite - may lose tip of 1 finger; Banerjee altitude sickness at BC & left; photographers also left
