| Route Notes | This ascent was unsupported without oxygen and to top alone as 1st woman to do this. Moved independently of Brice's team above ABC - did not use other's fixed camps. Took our loads to N Col in 3 trips (on 3rd slept at Col) and down ABC. Made camp at 7700m, slept there and down to ABC. 11 May from ABC to Col, picked up gear from Col, went to 7700m, slept there. 12 May up to 8300m with tent from Col and slept there (hard to make our platforms by moving loose stones) without sleeping bag; spent night melting and drinking liquid, dozing off and on. 13 May left tent at 4:40 am weather very dear, "incredibly cold," no wind. Had water bottle, small camera, walkie-talkie and spare batteries for feet warmer (have had frostbite 3 times before on Kangtega and Alps). 8300m was on snow camp to N Ridge-NE Ridge combination. Got to top 12:08 pm (had radio with her and said from top: "to Tom and Kate, my 2 children I'm on top of the world and I love them deeply." Took photos and started down 40 minutes later - met on ascent Italians (Bianchi & Christian) who had camped near her, overtook them, then they overtook her during long radio call at about 10:00-10:30 am and they reached top about 10 mins ahead of her; they were still there when she started down. She got further and further ahead of them. At 8300m at 4:00-4:15 pm packed up tent, chatted with Sherpas (Mallory's) and set off to 7700m (Italians slept at 8300m much late). Reached 7700m at 7:00 pm in fading light. 14th to ABC, alone to bottom of fixed ropes at 6500m, where 2 people (Greg Child and Brice) came up to meet her and 3 together to ABC - had over tents, high altitude food, etc. 2:00 pm or earlier - very very tired. Night of 18th had to walk 18 km over landslide debris to reach Zangmu from 7700m to ABC every Sherpa she met wanted to shake her hand and dozen foreigner congratulated her and shook her hand. At this point realized that I had done something people thought was quite special. I still find it hard to believe I actually climbed Mt Everest. Saw one set of footprints at summit from Nepal side of mountain. [Lobsang Jangbu on top 7 May]. Goes to K-2 in 3 weeks with Americans. Kangchengjunga this autumn or next spr. In KTM till 25th May at Hotel Gaurishankar from 21st. 22 May 95 - Marco Bianchi says Alison remained behind him and Kunter all the times on summit day, did not pass them on ascent - but she is very strong. She is a new star of the Himalayas, of woman for sure but also of men. She climbs like a man - she is very strong - and very kind. 6 June 95 - Russell Brice's members, Child, Whittaker and 2 Dickinsons say Alison made such a point of being independent that she would not sit in others tent to chat (let alone share tent at 8200-8300m to keep warm when she had no sleeping bag) or accept cup of tea from others. She was never seen using the fixed ropes. Brice adds: she used ladder on 2nd Step. 7 June 95 - Jon Tinker: Italians occasionally waited for Alison to move, up behind them on summit day - but she descended in good order whereas they did not, were very sick. |
