| Route Notes | C1 beyond top of Icefall C2 in Western Cwm C3 on Lhotse Face C4 at South Col. 1st summit bid on 7th May with Hall's team: Scaturro, Demarest, Bull and Bull, Apa, Pemba, Ang Pasang and Tashi Sherpa; got to S Summit at 12:30 pm when decided too late for safe return and wind coming up back to C4 at 7 pm. Had to wait total 4-5 hrs while Hall's team were fixing some of the rope & then getting Chantal Mauduit down narrow part of route. Then all down to BC 9th May. 2nd bid from Col by B. Bull, Heinrich, Apa, Nima Rita & Arita at 11 pm on 14th, got to top: Bull at 8, Heinrich at 8:10, 3 Sherpas 7:40 am; (6 am at S Summit & took 2 hrs to establish route because of snow. Back to S Col at 1 pm and slept there; BC on 17th, icefall closing day (Sherpas pulling ladders out right behind Burleson team). Price at 7 pm in icefall, members found him and put his warm clothing on him and too tired to bring him down; 2 Sherpas from BC at 7 pm reached him at 9 am and got him to BC 2 am on 7th May. This was Nima Rita's 3rd ascent of Everest, Apa's 7th, Arita's 1st (Apa and Arita are brothers). Americans on Everest 1995 - Bob Hoffman, leader During the next 10 days, the group, consisting of climbers, trekkers, Sherpas, porters and yaks trekked upward toward Everest Base Camp. The trek passed through the mountain villages of Phakding, Jorsale, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Pheriche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep. Everyone was picking litter on the trail and carrying it to the next camp; carrying the extra weight was difficult with the altitude, but the result - cleaner trail - made it worth the challenge. On April 13th the group, in reasonably good health and excellent spirits, arrived in BC. On the following day, the puja ceremony was performed, a traditional Buddist blessing of the climbers and the expedition. It was an especially auspicious day to hold a puja because the weather was clear and calm - a good omen. Armed with trash bags, the entire group swept the Base Camp area for trash, where they collected 60 kilos of trash left from previous expeditions. During the next week, eight of the ten members made carries through the icefall to C1. Then, C2 was established and was occupied by the eight members. The team and Sherpas would now begin to make carries to C3. Each day the team would start the climb in the cold and darkness of early morning when the icefall was more stable with less chance of collapse or avalanche. A few days later Guy ventured through the icefall where he stayed at C1. Meanwhile, Tommy now recovered began making his way up the mountain. By April 30th, Americans on Sagarmatha continued to be ahead of schedule. Tommy and Guy, now together, moved up to C2 getting accimatized, while the rest of the team headed back to BC for rest and recuperation after seven days at higher altitudes. Over the past weeks, the rest of the team had established three camps while carrying numerous loads of supplies and equipment up the mountain. The South Col route, had been climbed four times as the high altitude camps were established. |
