| Route Notes | C2 at West Cwm C3 on Lhotse Face C4 at South Col. Advance team with Sherpas arrived BC 16th March but only Arnold and Viesturs only members there till early April. Compressed climbing climbing time into shorter than normal and no plans had to be altered because of bad weather. Expedition had eight climbing members (one more than limit) because was old application submitted before new rules announced; actually had permission for 12 members [Tourism Ministry official said 13 May that limit on member didn't apply since this was a cleanup expedition and there is no fixed limit on these]. Cleanup efforts concentrated on removing oxygen bottles from S Col to C2 (@ Rs. 150-300/bottle) to Sherpa returning from Col) in cooperation with Goryl's US team. 200 bottles brought to C2 by 3 expeditions & 40-50 of these are still in C2. Kagge claims to be first person to go to N Pole, S Pole and "Third Pole" from their bases. Korean Heo Young-Ho (N Pole 1990, S Pole Jan 1993) started his ski trip at 80 degrees, 3 weeks closer to S Pole than coast, where Kagge began. Oxygen: Members (possibly not Viesturs) sleeping in C3 enroute to summit. Sherpas not (they didn't sleep in C3, went directly from C2 to C4). All members climbing from C3 to C4. All members except Viesturs and Sherpas sleeping in C4 night of 8th May. All members and Sherpas climbing from C4 to summit to C4 and sleeping in C4. 3 other Sherpas stayed at C4 to cook and be in support of needed on 8th and 9th; they also used oxygen. Sherpas: Ang Dorje, Pangboche - also known at Chuldin Dorje scaled Everest on Hall expeditions 12/5/92 & 10/5/93 Nima Gombu, Rolwaling - scaled Everest with French 9/10/93 (as Gombu) Norbu/Nuru, Rolwaling - scaled Everest and Lhotse with French in Oct 1993 |
