Route Notes Took a month to stock a C4 in a satisfactory site in battles against winds. Swenson came from E Face 12 May asking to join this expedition; committed to not using oxygen so would not be draining oxygen supply; friend of Eric Simonson who liked him & he fitted in well. Whetu "amazingly strong" - was at over 28,000 ft more then 24 hrs without oxygen. On May 4 Ang Phinzo (Phortse) collapsed from a stroke in ABC, was carried by 3 teams to BC, driven immediately to KTM in 36 hrs from ABC (C3), given 10,000 liters of oxygen, etc. During the evacuation he suffered 7 grand mal seizures. Team was ready to go up to C6 & summit when this emergency stopped everything. Hahn to top alone giving gear to Italians & then went up with this attempt. 2 members were at C6 with Edwards who almost would have gone to top if hadn't had to rescue others. Simonson could see Viesturs [who summited from Nepal] happy on summit while only 300m below Taiwanese lost & dying.
Accidents Ang Phinzo stroke at ABC 5th May but recovered completely; Hahn needed help in descent, so did Morgan; Rheinburger died of exhaustion after summiting
