Route Notes C1 as same as Americans C2 as same as Americans C3 as same as Americans C4 as same as Americans by Savoldelli and Poloni. Did not attempt W Ridge because of avalanching. Used same route as Americans and had C1, C2 and C3 in place. Tried to go into couloir but deep unstable snow. 20th Sept Dalla Longa and Birolini made 1st summit bid from C3; got to 7600m but winds too strong and down to C3. 2nd summit bid from C3 on 21st by Carminati and Rota; got to C4, spent the night, during which wind got very strong and down to ABC on 22nd. Yaks arriving at ABC on 25th so no more attempts. Could probably have gotton to top if leader hadn't had to get home 1st Oct.
