| Route Notes | BC at Kangshung Glacier (1988 expedition's ABC) C3 at South Col. 1988 expedition's cauliflower ridge "has completely changed." Basicly route same as 1988 but some places differed partly because of different snow conditions above 1988 C2 and other changes in mountain. Webster's wall only 3m high now instead of 20-25m in 1988 and huge crevasse at about 6800m had apparently twisted around and it was not necessary to have the Tirolean bridge traverse here of 1988. Made deposit at C2 on 6 May but slept there only on summit push from BC on 10 May by Buracchio, Delgado, Garcia-Huidobro, Jordon, Lucero, Montes to C1. 11 May rested in C1 and then Delgado gave up attempt because of rib broken earlier making route (Delgado to BC on 11th). 12 May 5 members to C2 in its first occupation. 13th 5 men went up from C3 and reached S Col. Buracchio, Lucero and Montes were to be Chilean Sherpas while Garcia-Huidobro and Jordan to be summiters. 4 members arrived at Col 11:00 pm, Montes feeling very strong now also became summiter; Lucero did not get to Col; reached 7600m at 11:00 am and then turned back tired and would be no room for him in one tent intended for two. 14th 3 summiters rested at Col while Buracchio down to C2. 14th 11:50 pm 3 men left S Col together for summit, Garcia-Huidobro breaking trail and lightly laden while Jordan and Montes carried 1 oxygen each without using it; at 8450m at about 4:00 am, where Sherpas of Spanish army caught up with them to be sure to reach summit and be there first (Sherpas told them Chilean was coming from Nepal-side team), Garcia-Huidobro and Jordan started using oxygen here - on top 15th: Garcia-Huidobro at 10:30 am - return C3 at 18:00 Jordan 11:20 am - return C3 at 17:00 Montes 13:00 am - return C3 at 18:30 Returned to C3 when slept that night. 16th took C3 down and C2 down and slept in C1, where arrived midnight. 17th May down to BC while those who had not climbed had moved everything to 1988 BC so all to 1988 BC. On 14th Garcia-Huidobro and 1 other member at Col saw and got on video film three probably four, people moving up couloir above S Col and reaching S Ridge. Have no idea how high they got and did not know who they were [presumably Russians]. |
