| Route Notes | C1 slightly beyond top of Icefall and others C1 C4 at lower slope of South Col. No problem of crowding at BC and were weekly meetings regarding garbage. Very good cooperation amongst all expeditions except Russians who decided to change route and who went with others tents and helped themselves to food. At C3 in a storm, Russian asked to come into Dutch C3 saying he couldn't find his camp but he had no C3 (it hadn't been pitched); Dutch didn't let him in and don't know what became of him. BC pitched 23rd March by advance team; whole expedition in BC 2nd April. 3rd May 1st summit bid reached 8300m and dropped oxygen which was used on 12th May; this by 3 members [Naar, Oefner, Van der Meulen] and 1 got slightly frostbitten three fingers and left expedition [Van der Meulen]. 10th May 2nd bid by 2 members [only Wesker, Nima Dorje, Nima Gombu] but got only 10m above C4; inexperienced, didn't use oxygen right, panicky because of altitude and down to BC same day. 9th May 2 members [Naar, Oefner] with 2 Sherpas left BC to C2; 10th in C3, 11th C4, the last to leave BC and to arrive at C4 where at least 40 people were camped in plenty of space (Russians probably slept in Spanish tent). On 12th to top going between New Zealand team member moving slowly and fixing themselves ropes fixed at Hillary Step: Dutch jumped the queue formed to scale step. Left C4 at 1 am on 12th reached S Summit at 9:30 am and main summit at 11:30 am Naar first, then Dawa, Nima and lastly Oefner; returned to C4 at 5 pm, slept there and down to C2 on 13th & BC on 14th. No clients (who had paid $18,000) got to top and they left disappointed. Early departures: 1 May - Zoeteman's filming contract ended 30th April. 8 May - Achterbosch demoralized by Indians in front of his tent. Ritzen had had enough (had reached 6950m). Zuidhoff was sick & demoralized. Timmermans left with Zuidhoff, her boyfriend. Van der Meulen had had enough. Use of oxygen: Used by all who went to C4: summit team of 12 May; Dutch member used it in 10th May sleeping in C3, on 11th climbing to C4 and sleeping there; Sherpas used it sleeping in C4; all four on 12th used it from C4 to summit and back to C4 and sleeping in C4. Ronald Naar, Dutch Everest expedition leader - 20 May 1992 This was first successful Dutch Everest Expedition. Vos's claim to have been seen by his "Sherpa" from South Summit while Vos was on main summit (Aut 1984) could not be true because, as Naar saw for himself, main summit cannot be seen from S Summit. Ganesh Gurung told Naar in 1986 & in 1988 that he saw Vos reach bottom of Hillary Step and turn back there without going higher. |
