| Route Notes | 1st C1 at 5800m destroyed by avalanche from Changtse so put new C1 little higher. C2 a problem: quality of snow, frequent snowfalls, almost everyday. Team was at or above BC. Fixed rope on bottom of face to C2 but 3 times ropes & deposit of gear taken away by avalanching. Possible for 1 or 2 climbers to go quickly up face but not for bigger group making fixed camps and intending to use oxygen. Avalanching came everyday and all across face including down. Hornbein permit was valid till 15 Sept. On 8th decided to stop climb: would have needed 2 weeks more. Weather was warm, which means avalanche danger - some climbers pushed by avalanches but not hurt. C2 site had been reached 3 times before slept in on 7 Sept - 1st time on 15 or 17 Aug - always by same 3 members. |
| Accidents | Borrey had a serious internal problem (stomach ulcer) and doctor sent him home |
