Route Notes BC at normal site C1 at top of Icefall C2 in Western Cwm C3 at Batard's snow cave on Lhotse Face C4 at South Col High point at South Col. Started going up W Shoulder 24th April and reached US 1963 C4 site at c7400m on shoulder; by now only 3 members still climbing and felt not strong enough (2 had left and Pickering had stopped) and Sherpas to C2 only (scared of W Ridge and plan was to move very light weight). Other teams gave no objection to switch to S Col route and while awaiting HMG permission moved up to Col. 2 May weather both windy and storm front coming in) and Groom down to BC on 2nd while Coulton and Dignan now down to C2 on 3rd and BC on 4th. Left BC 10th May. Sachit Pant, HMG - 15 Sept 1991 Permission to change route refused because of the number of other teams already granted permission.
