Route Notes C1 at top of Icefall C2 in Western Cwm C3 on Lhotse Face C4 at South Col High point on SE Ridge. From C2 down to BC; up again 10th May to C2 and on 12th to C3. 13th Kurt Stuewe to C4 and 2 days there. Sepp Hassler wanted to go to S Col but turned around at 7850m because of altitude sickness and down to C3. Hassler to C2 on 15th. 15th Stuewe tried for top with Jay Sieger of French expedition; they had slept at col on oxygen of Yugoslav expedition (without asking or paying for it - "gave some trouble in BC"). Started 12:30-1:00 am of 15th. Jay to 8600m and Kurt at 8650m at 1:00-2:00 pm; defeated by deep snow and too hard for them; both using oxygen (Kurt's Yugoslav system not working well). Slept again at S Col on 15th, on 16th down to C3, where Hassler was and together to C2. Kurt and Jay stayed stayed in C2 watching weather conditions but made no other summit attempt. Kurt to BC 21 May. Hassler had ordered porters to leave BC 22nd and they left that day. Kurt and Jay stayed on in C2 watching weather conditions but no other summit attempts.
