Route Notes Yuasa - 23 Jan 89 Hasegawa's Everest bid ended on 26 Dec 1988 at 8000m. Strong winds defeated them. They were 3 Japanese climbers and 1 manager, no Sherpas, no oxygen. Route was new one to left of Great Couloir and right of N Ridge. 24 Jan - Hasegawa actually tried 2 routes onto North Face at its eastern end. Marc Twight - 3 Nov 88 Hasegawa and 2 other climbers still on couloir between NE and N Ridges BC end Sept. ABC very early Oct. Hasegawa arrived ABC 14 Oct. Started walking on route 25 Oct and were fixing route. Expected be on top about 25 Dec. Had oxygen but no Sherpas. From Iwa-to-Yuki Another Japanese team led by Tsuneo Hasegawa (40) comprised 5 members approached Qomolangma in Oct-Dec from northeast side. They this time taking the same route attempted the face between the NE Ridge and the North Col, which they failed in 87/88. They placed C3 (7350m). On Nov 24, while Hasegawa and other 2 members were staying at C3, which was [were] attacked by a block avalanche. They narrowly escaped and by 20 or more pitches of rapelling descended back to their BC. After this, cold weather got bitter and bitter, by which the team was forced to abandon the activities at the point of 7800m - only 150 meters higher than previous year.
