Route Notes BC at bottom of Icefall C1 at top of Icefall C2 in Western Cwm C3 on Lhotse Face (slightly lower than Austrians) C4 at Col High point at slope above Col. Didn't occupy C3 until summit teams ready to move up; otherwise used for dump or acclimatizating. Col camp first slept in 8th Oct by Noble and Whittaker but had equipment there quite a while. 1st summit bid had been by them, Rhoads and Athans who got to C3 on 28th. Noble and Whittaker started for top from C4 [9 Oct], turned back at 8075m because of winds. Col reached several times afterwards but no wind improvement and then blizzard of 19th "flattened everything" with wind, avalanching on Lhotse Face and snow, predominantly wind. Most of team left after storm subsided; 4 left but 3 got stomach trouble while Athans tried to go up with Sherpas but now winds from north showed winter looming. Athans finally left BC 1st Nov. * 10 Nepalese above BC.
Accidents 1 Gurung only serious illness (he returned to expedition later)
