Route Notes Lute Gerstad - 14 Jan 66 Apparently to 20,000 ft road up East Rangbuk Glacier which is stable moraine - pushed by Chinese last year for attempt to climb Everest again fall 1966 - "lots" of trucks - purpose of road to get supplies as high as possible and yaks to carry higher - also and more importantly to put road into Nepal in Everest on top of road thus apparently at site of C3 at beginning of permanent snow and movement in glacier ice. Said attempt made to climb last fall - on north side weather much more stable after monsoon - very cold but if not can save month's time and easy walk from North Col to 28,000 ft - actually many not have been climbing attempt last fall but merely setting up stores - trying put road between Everest and Makalu to enter Nepal there. C3 at foot of North Col. Kobe Academic Alpine Club - 3 Japanese He hopes bring German Alpine Club expedition to Annapurna in 1971 to try either via north side Glacier Dome (where thinks weather would be better) or if Nepal, doesn't give permission for north, from South Annapurna Glacier, not West Annapurna Glacier thus avoiding dangerous area ice seracs below C3 Wants 6-7 members and 12 Sherpas.
