Route Notes Evgeny Tamm (Soviet 82 Everest exp) - 2 Dec 81 There had been plans for a joint Soviet-Chinese expedition to Everest in 1959 and three Russian mountaineers had gone to the foot of Everest on the Chinese side on a reconnaissance. However the actual climb never took place "because of events in Tibet at that time." 2 Oct 78 According the Chinese Mountaineering Association officials, the Soviets backed out of a planned joint Sino-Soviet expedition in 1959 and the Chinese climbed alone in 1960. Alpine Journal, Vol 99 (1994) Team consisted of 10 Chinese and 3 Russian mountaineers, 3 meteorologists, 4 topographers, 4 radio operators, 10 Tibetan porters, and other assorted personnel. Mint Wu - April 2012 First reconnaissance in such area by Chinese; people were divided in to 2 teams that reached up to east of eastern Rongbuk Glacier at 6500m and west of central Rongbuk Glacier at 6200m, respectively.
