| Route Notes | BC 17/04 5200m ABC 24/04 6400m C1 20/05 7000m C2 21/05 7600m C3 22/05 8300m by Zucchelli Smt 23/05 23/05 by Zucchelli and Chhangba Sherpa at 4 am with oxygen. 3 rounds of acclimatization for Rossi and Joyeusaz without reaching North Col. 2 rounds of acclimatization for Turani without reaching North Col. 2 rounds of acclimatization for Zucchelli reaching North Col on the second one. Joyeusaz had intended to ski Hornbein Couloir back in 2010. Had avalanches anywhere back then, were trying without Sherpas, with Gianluca Marra (got edema) and Francesco Civra. Instead skied back then a little peak nearby Lingtren; then an other nice descent on nearby Yangtse skied again in 2016 by Jornet and co. This time, he chose to switch seasons, but conditions weren't much better than in 2010. The proper Hornbein would be in good conditions, whereas the whole Japanese Couloir lower part would be in ice. So useless to give it a try, since it would have been impossible to ski down. Rossi and Joyeusaz went up with their Sherpas up to C2 then descended without them as they were used for rescuing an Australian climber. Joyeusaz did a little skiing on North Ridge on very hard snow across some wind slabs. The driving with jeep back to Nepal was very the scariest part of the whole trip. Zucchelli is the 5th Italian female climber to reach Everest, 4th with oxygen. May 17: all from BC to ABC. May 18-19: all stayed at ABC. May 20: all slept at C1 except Turani who went back down to ABC on that day (had job problem back home, reached BC on the day after). May 21: High point for Joyeusaz and Rossi at C2, since sleeping was not possible at C2 since no tent was available for them. Zucchelli only would sleep at C2 (with oxygen). May 22: Zucchelli slept at C3 (with oxygen). May 23: summit for Zucchelli and her Sherpa at 4 am (dark). Back to C2 at 3 pm on that day. May 24: Zucchelli from C2 to ABC. May 25: Zucchelli from ABC to BC. May 27: Zucchelli left BC. Members: Edmond Joyeusaz, high point on May 21 at C2. Oxygen from C1 to C2, down sking without oxygen to C1. Jean-Marie Rossi (photographer), high point on May 21 at C2. Oxygen from ABC to C2 to ABC. Daniele Turani, high point on May 20 at 7000m at North Col (back to ABC on that day). Oxygen not used. Ines Zucchelli, summit on May 23. Oxygen from C2 (sleeping) to summit to C2. Left BC on May 25 for Turani, Joyeusaz, Rossi and May 27 for Zucchelli. From Arnold Coster: Joyeusaz and Jean-Marie Rossi reached 7600m on 22/05. Joyeusaz was only interested in skiing the Hornbein Couloir and Jean-Marie was his photographer. However, when they looked into the couloir as well as the Japanese Couloir it was too icy and they decided to go down. Joyeusaz skied down from 7500m to crampon point (6650m). |
