At 1st Step was a lot of traffic. They had to wait for about half an hour. Otherwise straightforward climb. Stayed about 10 minutes on the summit. Weather was good, but strong winds and very cold. On the descent, there was congestion above the 2nd Step. They had to wait for about one hour. De Castro and Ibarra descended to C2, where they arrived in the early evening. Willi descended to ABC, where he arrived late. Landgraf:s death: Neuschmid was with von Wolff, Grubhofer and Landgraf and their Sherpas above the 2nd Step. They waited for about one hour. Landgraf fell off the 2nd Step (he was clipped in) and when his Karma Gyaltsen Sherpa went to help him up, he could not. He was still breathing, but did not respond. About five minutes later he was dead. Karma descended to C3, where Neuschmid, Grubhofer, von Wolff and their Sherpas were. They all stayed the night. On 23/05 everyone descended to ABC. On 25/05, three Sherpas from another operator brought Landgraf down from the top of the 2nd Step to the bottom of the 2nd Step, where he now remains. Kober stayed at CBC for the whole of the expedition as he was never intending to climb. Team left BC on 25/05. Sherpas: Lale Tamang, Rasuwa (de Castro) Dawa Lama, Taplejung (Neuschmid) Karma Gyaltsen, Solo Khumbu (Landgraf) Kusan Tenjing Taplejung (Ibarra Letelier) Nagyal Sherpa (de Castro) Tashi Sherpa (von Wolff) Chunga Sherpa (Henry Willi) Lakpa Gelu (Grubhofer) Oxygen: Used from C1 to top to C1 by members, C2 to top to C2 by Sherpas. |
