Filippi and Sonam left C4 at 1:30 am. There were hardly any people on the route. Straightforward climb. They spent about 10 minutes on the summit. It was very cold and windy. They descended to C4 where they arrived at 4 pm. On 16/05, the team left C4 at 3 am. They descended to Lhotse C4, where they arrived at 3:45 am. Then up to Lhotse. He passed a few people (Chatur Tamang). At about 200m below the summit, they came across an Italian climber, who was a bit confused and told them he did not have a Sherpa or oxygen. Filippi thought that he needed a rescue, but his Sherpa arrived. When they reached the summit, they met Ivan Tomov, who later died at C4 in his tent. Filippi thought he was acting a bit weird. Sonam and Filippi stayed on the summit for about 15 minutes and when they went down, they asked Tomov to come down with them, but he said he wanted to wait for his team member. This was the last time Filippi saw Tomov. They descended to C2, where they arrived 4 pm. On 17/05 BC and left BC on 19/05. Eric Contant was intending to climb Lhotse only reached 6400m on the first rotation. He had troubles with his eye and left BC. Filippi was intending to do the Triple Crown, but abandoned the idea on 16/05 because of lack of equipment. Sherpa: Sonam Sherpa, Taksindu, 18/04/1998 Oxygen: Taken and used from C3 to top of Everest to top of Lhotse and down to C3 by Filippi; from C4 to top of Everest to top of Lhotse to C3 by Sherpa. |
