Route Notes Report of Mirza Ali Baig: BC 18/04 5350m C1 29/04 6086m C2 30/04 6440m C3 20/05 7100m C4 21/05 7900m (12:30) Smt 22/05 by Ali Baig and Pemba Sherpa Lama at 2:16 am. Ali Baig and Pemba Sherpa left C4 at 6:30 pm on 21/05. Milind Raskhar, Don Cash, Khai from the US (Vietnam) and the Indian Brothers (Mahendra and Hitendra Mahajan) also left around the same time. At the beginning Ali Baig and Pemba had a big queue in front of them until the Balcony, however, they overtook most of them. From the Hillary Step they were the first people. It was very cold and windy. They stayed about 10 to 15 minutes on the summit (Lakpa Tendu Sherpa and Dawa Sherpa from Survey team, Chhiring Jambu from a different team arrived shortly after them) and they descended to C4, where they arrived at 6:30 am. On the way down, they had to wait for the crowds to come up for nearly three hours. Two hours at the Hillary Step only. When they reached the South Summit, Ali Baig noticed that his eyes were hurting and he could not see properly. He had probably wind burn as he was not wearing glasses on the ascent. The changed oxygen at the South Summit and rested a bit. At the rock section below the South Summit they were held up again for about half an hour. At C4 they rested for a short time. Ali Baig put black tea bags on his eyes and then they continued to C4 with very bad eyesight. They arrived at C2 at 2 pm. Ali Baig’s eyes got worse and they organised a helicopter rescue from C2. They were picked up by heli on 23/05 at 8 am. He went to ER at BC and was then transferred to Kathmandu to CIWEC, where he spent one night. His eyes are Ok now even though he still cannot face sunlight. Other members: Magdalena from Poland did not summit Lhotse. She never left BC as she had frostbite on her toes. Khai from USA did not summit. He turned around below the Balcony on 22/05. He was slow and tired. Don Cash summited on 22/05 (after Ali Baig). He collapsed on the summit. Lhakpa Nurbu and Pasang Tenji did CPR on him and revived him. They brought him down to about 8760m where he died. They left his body there. Mahendra and Hitendra Mahajan, Pasang Sherpa and another Sherpa (who was on Makalu with Magdalena) summited on 22/05, quite late at around 9 am. Hitendra Mahajan was very tired when he came down from the summit. Jeremy Tong and one Sherpa from Singapore summited on 22/05. Talung from China and Pasang Ji Sherpa summited on 22/05. One Taiwan lady (Chan Chiao-Yu) and one Chinese man (Li Yuan) together with Lhakpa and Mingma Dorje (the directors fo Pioneer) were going for the summit on 24/05. The never left the South Col as the weather was bad. Baig left BC (from C2) on 23/05. Oxygen: Taken and used from C3 to top to C3 by Ali Baig and Pemba. Sherpas: Pemba Sherpa Lama, Makalu-4, Sankhuwasabha, 19/06/1989 (summited Makalu on 15/05 with Mohite from India) Report of Mahendra Mahajan: BC 18/04 5300m C1 29/04 6000m C2 30/04 6500m C3 20/05 7400m C4 21/05 7900m Smt 22/05 by Mahendra, Hitendra, Dawa and Pastemba. Mahendra and Dawa started from C4 at 7 pm of 21 May, reached summit at 5 am of 22 May, stayed there about 30 minutes and back to C4 at 1 pm, and spent the night there. On 23 spent the night at C2 and next day 24 May heli-lifted from there to BC, then to Lukla. Oxygen: Members and two Sherpas C3-summit-C2. Note form Mahendra: We used oxygen after reaching C3 in the afternoon. While sleeping also we used it at minimal flow rate. Thereafter up to summit and ciming back/descending to C2. Dawa Italy was the name of my Sherpa. Hitendra's Sherpa was Pastemba. I developed severe eye burning after descending to C4. My googles got frosted with ice on summit after I shifted them to forehead for some time to click photos at summit. So had to use my ski googles, which blocks the near vision, so used them on and of. Burning was very severe, so slept at C4. Next morning the burning reduced 50%, and could descend down to C2 by evening. Slept at night in C2. Next day took helicopter from C2 to EBC to Lukla.
