Summit team left C3 at 11:50 pm on 18/05. Weather clear, but winds stronger than forecast. Visibility 100%. They spent about 10 minutes on the summit. Rassl, o’Brian, Szwed, Nerve and Maughan descended to C3, where they arrived at 3pm. Lawrie, Madden, Renshaw, McKnight descended to C2, where they arrived at 6 pm. At about 50m below the top on the descent, Rassl sat down and said he could no longer continue and had lost his vision (due to snowblindness). He had not put on his sunglasses on the way up, even though O’Brien had told him several times. O’Brien and Jangbu Sherpa helped him down by short-roping, moving his feet with their hands. It took about 12 hours and they reached C3 at 9 pm. On 20/05 Rassl was feeling a bit better and was able to get down to ABC by himself. Kallio reached 6500m on 04/05, but the climb was too hard for him so he left the expedition. Magnus Nerve reached 8730m. He decided to turn back at that point as he was tired and knew that he would run into trouble on the way down. Renshaw turned back at 8450m (mushroom ridge). He was too tired to continue. Team left ABC on 21/05. Oxygen: Taken and used from North Col to top to North Col by members and Sherpas. Sherpas: SummitClimb Sherpas from Patle. |
