Route Notes First to arrive at BC were Francois from Belgium and the climbing Sherpas, who reached BC on 4 April, in good time to get a head start and to pitch their camp where they wanted it, not far from the Icefall. But they had to wait for their baggage to turn up: it was delayed by bad weather. The four Singaporeans reached BC on the 9th of April and the Malaysians [on same team/permit] came the following day. Before tackling Everest, four Singaporeans, their Belgian teammate, and five Sherpas including the team's leader Jamling climbed to the summit of Lobuche East on 13 April. Then on the 14th, the whole team ventured into the Khumbu Icefall. The Four Singaporeans and the Belgian got as far as 100 meters below C1, which was at the top of the Icefall at about 6000m. Two Malaysians [Ishak and Mahamad Yusoff], climbing very slowly, reached 200 meters lower than the Singaporeans (see EVER-151-44). All slept in BC that night. Meanwhile nine load-carrying Sherpas had dumped loads as high as C2 (6500m) on the previous day. For more acclimatization, on 18th the team climbed on the lower reaches of Pumori, and three days later they were on Kalapattar, then returned to BC that day. Now they had to wait at BC on the 22nd and 23rd because of snowfall. They spent the 24th packing for their ascent to C1 next day. They never got there: a devastating earthquake struck the area on the 25th. This team's BC camp was close enough to the bottom of the Icefall to be spared fatal damage by the tremor, but the camps lower than it was gravely hit. Jamling's teams waited for the shaking to subside and to learn what would happen next. On 30 April they decided there would be no more climbing; they cancelled their plan to attempt Everest. Most of the members left BC the next day by helicopter to Lukla and fixed wing to Kathmandu. Jamling flew by helicopter to Kathmandu on the 5th.
