| Route Notes | Dujmovits scaled Everest in October 1992 via the South Col, but he had used bottled oxygen then, and now he wanted to scale it without it. Now he was on the North Col route with no Sherpa helpers as well as no supplemental oxygen. He arrived at Chinese BC on 23 April, his ABC on the 30th and C1 on the North Col on 6 May. On the 8th, he descended to ABC in one hour. He returned to the North Col on the 16th and climbed up to 7700m on the 17th. But now strong winds (60 km/hr) buffetted him, and on the 18th he returned to ABC. He ventured up once more on the 22nd to C1 and on the 23rd to C2. But when he got up to C3 at 8300m on the 24th, he had problems. It had not snowed for 14 days, so there was no snow lying on the face. All the good spots for his tent were already occupied by large commercial teams. He had a very difficult time trying to dig out a platform for his tent and managed to make only a very uncomfortable small area for himself. Furthermore his tent was not a strong, substantial one; it was vulnerable to the wind. He couldn't even heat water inside it. He spent a miserable night. The wind was still strong the next morning, the 25th. Without supplemental oxygen in strong wind, the body does not keep warm. He gave up. He brought his high camps down to C1 that day, on the 26th he was back in ABC and on the 27th in BC. On the 28th there was one meter of fresh snow, so vehicles could not reach BC. Dujmovits walked to a tented village, from where he was able to ride to Kathmandu, he arrived in the city on the 29th. He fixed no ropes on the mountain himself. He used ropes already installed from ABC to C1 only. |
