Route Notes To acclimatize before tackling Everest from its Tibetan side, the expedition first climbed Lhakpa Ri, a mountain about 6900m north of Everest. All members, plus four Sherpas, reached the summit together on 24 April. The successful Everest summit party, set out for the top from C3 at 10:30 pm on 20 May and were on the summit on 21 May together at 6:30 am. They descended all the way to ABC between 5:00 and 7:00 pm the same day. They were: Aulestia, Baertschi, Boebner-Meier, Garioni, Hundeshagen and Mondinelli with Sherpas Chhongba, Dendi, Kancha Lama, Lhakpa Gelu, Ngima Thenduk, Nuru Wangchu, Pemba and Tembe. Non-summiting members: Bernard, who already had a virus infection in his throat when he arrived in Nepal from Switzerland, managed twice to climb to C2 at 7700m, but his ailment endured and he left Nepal on 15 May. Kobler got to 7500m on 19 May on the team's summit push, but strong wind sent him down to ABC to check on the weather forecast, and he remained there. All summiting members used oxygen from C1 (7000m) to the top to C3 (8300m) or to 7800m, depending on where their supply ran out. (The highly experienced mountaineer, Silvio Mondinelli, used oxygen this trip only because he was shepherding a client, Aldo Garioni). Their Sherpas used it from 7700m (C2) to the top to 8300m or lower, wherever their supply ran out.
