| Route Notes | Hahn had been climbing Everest for years. He commented this time that "every year the snow conditions are getting worse. Its much drier at the top." This team of six was composed of just three clients. The others were the leader, the assistant leader, and the BC manager who did not go above BC. Unfortunately, the clients dropped out before the climb was over, leaving only the leader and his assistant in position for reaching the summit. The first member to drop out was Fitch. He climbed from BC on 19th April with assistant leader Waterfall, but when they got to 6250m, between C1 and C2, Fitch developed a chest pain, which was thought in Nepal to be a heart problem but was diagnosed in the USA as the result of serious indigestion. In any case, Waterfall was much too good a climber for Fitch to keep up with, and anyway Fitch was not in good shape and was frightened by the Icefall. He left from BC by helicopter on 23 April. Mark Wilkins went with Fitch. He, too had reached 6250m but he said he didn't feel safe climbing the Khumbu Icefall and didn't want to go through it again. Johnson had a bad cough that he couldn't get rid of. He had already been to 7250m on Lhotse's West Face, but now he was fading. He left C2 for the top on at 4 am on 21 May with Hahn and Waterfall intending to occupy C3 that night; instead they turned around at the base of the Lhotse face and retreated to C2. Johnson was back in BC on the 22nd, ending his climb. Finally, it was just the leader, the assistant leader and three Sherpas, Gyalze, Kazi and Tshering/Chhiring Dorje, who were left. On the day that Johnson returned to BC, the five men moved up from C2 to C4. While Gyalze stopped in C4, the remaining four went to the summit at 7:30 am on the 23rd and were back in C2 at 3:30 that afternoon. The five cleared C4 and C3 as they descended, and all were back in BC on the 24th. Sherpas had pitched C3 on 7 May, and stocked it with a supply of oxygen for summiters, but it was never occupied. Oxygen was used by Hahn, Waterfall and the three Sherpas from C3, where their supply of oxygen had been stored, to C4 and the summit and down to C2 by all except Gyalze, who stopped in C4, where he stayed that night. Gyalze stopped at C4 because of Hahn's policy of having one climber stay back at a high camp "to support the effort and perform radio relays between the climbing team and base camp," Hahn explained. "He was fully capable of going on." Sherpas: Gyalze/Gyalje, 26/9/77, Kagani-8, Okhaldhunga, Everest X1 Kazi Sherpa, 29/5/71, Tapting-9, Solu, Everest X4 Tshering/Chhering Dorje Sherpa (he spells his first name Chhering), 3/3/89, Beding, Everest X6, Cho Oyu X2, Manaslu X2 |
