Route Notes One member, Waskiewicz, quit the team early in its climbing period. He went to C1 on the North Col with the others in their first occupation of the camp on 5 May, but now he didn't feel strong, and the problems he could see above them were too much for him. He left the expedition on 7 May. There seemed the possibility of another casualty, in early May, when Szymczak developed a bad pulmonary infection. Everyone went down to the border village of Zangmu in order to lose altitude and rest. Szymczak fully recovered. The summit party consisted of just three members, plus three Sherpas, Pasang Gelu, Pemba Gyalzen and Rinji. The six men left C3 for the top on 24 may at 11:00 pm (NST). But only two of the Sherpas, Pemba Gyalzen and Rinji, actually went all the way to the summit: the Sherpas decided amongst themselves that the least experienced of them, Pasang Gelu, should stop a the Third Step (about 8650m.) Szymczak reached the summit at 6:40 am on 25 May, while the other two members, Kukuczka and Zaluski, got there at 6:55 am. The weather conditions were favourable: little wind and very clear skies, but rather cold. The clouds stayed away through out their descent to C1 by Kukuczka and Szymczak and to ABC by Zaluski. Oxygen was used by all summiting members in C2 to the top; Szymczak and Zaluski stopped using it when they returned to C2, but Kukuczka descended to C1 with it. Their Sherpas used it in C3 to their high points and down to wherever their supply ran out. Sherpas: Pasang Gelu, 31/8/71, Jantarkhani-7, Okhaldhunga Pemba Gyalzen, 21/6/73, Khumjung, Everest X2 Rinji Sherpa, 1964, Patle-6, Okhaldhunga
