| Route Notes | After the expedition had arrived at BC on 14 April, they trekked around the BC area and climbed three nearby peaks to acclimatize before going up to ABC on the 21st. The group made two attempts to reach the summit. On 17 May, they slept in C2 at 7700m, but the wind was too strong to make a summit bid the next day, so after ascending only 100m, they went down to ABC on the 18th instead. They were back in C2 on 22 May, stayed there on the 23rd, moved up to C3 on the 24th, and left C3 for the top at 10:00 pm (NST) on the 24th. The climbers who set out from C3 were McDonald, Meister, Meyerhoff, Sprenger, Urech and Wellig, plus Sherpas Gyamjo, Kanchha Lama, Kusang Tenzing, Mingma Gyabu, Nima Thenduk, Pemba Sherpa, Pemba Nurbu and Wangchu Sherpa. Two other Sherpas went with the summit team only as far as 8500m to place a supply of oxygen there and then returned to C3 to be on standby in case they were needed for a rescue. They were Chhiti Thinduk Bhote and Tenji Sherpa. All summit party members and Sherpas summited at 4:00 to 4:30 am on 25 May. All of them descended all the way to ABC the same day: McDonald returned to ABC at 12:00 noon, most of the other members at 4:00 pm, while Meister, Meyerhoff and Kobler got there at 6:00 pm. (Kobler had not gone for the summit on 24-25 May, but did climb to 7800m on the aborted first summit attempt on 18 May; he stayed during most of the climbing period in C1 to direct operations and now joined the summiters in their descent to ABC). The climbers moved down to BC on the 26th and left BC on the 28th to return to Kathmandu and for most members to leave Nepal on the 29th of May. Oxygen was used by the members of the successful summit party from C1 to the top to wherever their supply ran out. Their Sherpas used it in and from C2 to their high points to C3. Non-summiting members: Dusatko got to 7000m on 23 May, but was suffering from stomach trouble and descended to ABC. Kobler climbed to 7800m on 18 May, but stayed most of the time in C1 (see summit party paragraph above). Wild reached 7800m on 21 May, but had a respiratory infection so went down to BC the same day. Sherpas: Chhiti Thinduk Bhote, 25/8/81, Hatiya-3, Makalu, Everest X1 Gyamjo Sherpa, 3/8/86, Ghunsa, Lelep-9, Taplejung Kancha Lama Sherpa, 19/11/83, Taksindu-2, Solu Kusang Tenzing Sherpa, 16/5/86, Ghunsa, Lelep-9, Taplejung, Everest X3, Manaslu X1 Mingma Gyabu Sherpa, 19/1/88, Ghunsa, Lelep-9, Taplejung Nima Tendu/Ngima Thenduk, 31/8/73, Mathilow, Upper Walung, Makalu-9, Everest X3 Pemba Sherpa, 9/7/82, Ghunsa, Lelep-9, Taplejung, Everest X1, Cho Oyu X1 Pemba Nurbu Sherpa, 6/12/78, Ghunsa, Lelep-9, Taplejung, Everest X4, Cho Oyu X2 Tenji Sherpa, 16/4/81, Tapting-7, Solu, Everest X1 Wangchu Sherpa, 2/2/78, Taksindu, Solu, Everest X4 |
