Route Notes C4 at South Col High point at 8650m at bottom of Hillary Step. Yamashita had already summited Everest from the Tibetan side in previous years. Now he wanted to climb from the Nepalese side. In his bid for the summit, he left C4 for the top at 9:00 pm on 18 May. With him were two Sherpas, Pasang Kitar and Bir Kaji Tamang, but Pasang Kitar was getting frostbite when he reached the Balcony (8400m) the next morning, and he turned around there. Yamashita and Bir Kaji continued their ascent in very windy and very cold weather. However, when they arrived at the bottom of the Hillary Step (8650m) at 10am that morning, the 19th of May, Yamashita was very tired and he gave up. He and Bir Kaji retreated to C4, where they arrived at 2:00 pm. They descended to C2 the next day and on the 21st were back in BC. The team left BC on the 23rd to return to Kathmandu. During his summit push, Yamashita used oxygen in C3 to his high point to and in in C4 and down to 6500m. The two Sherpas used it in C4 to their high points to but not in C4 in descent. Sherpas: Bir Kaji Tamang, 10/12/78, Gorakhani-4, Solu, Everest X1 Pasang Kitar, 25/2/79, Beding, Everest X7, Cho Oyu X3
