Route Notes First Group: BC(09/04,5250m) C1(19/04,6065m) C2(22/04,6500m) C3(17/05,7300m) C4(18/05,7900m) Smt(19/05) Second Group: BC(24/04,5250m) C1(26/04,6065m) C2(30/04,6500m) C3(24/05,7300m) C4(25/05,7900m) Smt(26/05) This very large expedition was divided into two teams who arrived at BC two weeks apart. The first group arrived on 9 April and was led by the expedition's overall leader, Mike Hamill. The second one reached BC on 24 April and was led by Greg Vernovage. They used the same campsites up the mountain, but they summited one week apart. Altogether 23 of the 36 members got to the top. 59 Sherpas went above BC, and 25 of them summited. The successful climbers accomplished the first ascent by a Latvian woman, Ms Olga Kotova, and a remarkable continuous ascent and descent by a Mexican, David Pastor, and Mingma Tenzing Sherpa. The three summited on the same day, 26 May. After arriving at BC, the first group went for an acclimatization climb of Lobuche East. Most members and some of their Sherpas got to its summit on 14 May. Then they turned their attention to Everest. On the West Face of Lhotse, they made their route on the right side of the face, like the British 1953 route, where climbers were not threathened by the rock fall that was a serious menace in the early weeks of the season. Thirteen members of the first group set out for the top from C4 at about 8:00 am on the 18th; they were Al-Faisal, Amatangel, Cann, Dost, Merle, Meittinen, Nelson, Neumann, O'Brien, Pettijohn, Polloczek, Simmons and Wedberg. Two never got there: Cann and Pettijohn were too slow and had to turn back to C4. The remaining 11 members reached the summit on 19 May between 4:33 am (O'Brien) and 9:15 am. (Al-Saud and Amatangel). With them was an equal number of Sherpas: Ang Chhiring, Ang Gyalzen, Chewang Lendu, Chhiring, Kancha Nuru, Mingma, Mingma Dorje, Mingma Tenzing (1/6/86), another Mingma Tenzing, Pemba, Phinjo Dorje, Tenjing Gyalzen, and Tseten Dorje. Two of these Sherpas had to turn back with the two slow members: Ang Chhiring went down with Cann, and Ang Gyalzen with Pettijohn. The successful members got back to C4 from 10:30 am (O'Brien) to 3:28 pm (Dost, Merle and Neumann). The second group came along seven days later. Thirteen members, Berger, Bunce, Dailey, Field, Hannenann, Haugen, Kotova, Moniz, Pastor, Prudnikova, Rasappan, Remza and Sand left C4 around 8:00-8:30 pm on the 25th with 15 Sherpas, Ang Chhiring, Ang Karma, Chewang Lendu (again from BC), Da Rita, Danuru, Dawa Finchok, Karma Dorje, Mingma Chhiring, Mingma Tenzing (1/6/86)(again from BC), Nuru Gyalzen, Phu Tashi, Phunuru, Phurba Ongyal, Samduk Dorje. Remza had stomach trouble and turned back, but all the others got to the top on 26 May between 2:56 am (Pastor and Mingma Tenzing) and 7:15 am (Bunce, a guide, bringing up the rear). All descended to C2; first, were Pastor and Mingma Tenzing at 10:30 am and last was Bunce (7:20 pm). Pastor and Mingma Tenzing were a special pair: they made a continuous climb up and down the mountain, with pauses along the way. They left BC at 1:00 am of the 25th, reached C2 at 5:30 am and stayed there an hour. At 6:30 am they started up again, arrived at C3 at 10:30 am, stayed half an hour and left at 11:00 am. On their way up to C4, they waited half an hour for a Spaniard's body to be brought down, then resumed their climb and reached C4 at the South Col at 2:00 pm. They stayed in C4, waiting for the second group's summit party to leave for the top, and at 8:20 am on the set out with them. Pastor now had stomach trouble, "but I kept going," he said, and they were on the summit at 4:16 am on 26 May in perfect weather. Pastor and Mingma Tenzing stayed on the summit only long enough to take a few pictures, then down to C4 at 7:15 am, left C4 an hour later, and were back in C2 at 10:54 am. They stopped in C2 to eat dal bhat with some Sherpas and left C2 while Mingma Tenzing stayed in BC, Pastor left at 1:00 pm for Pheriche, where he arrived at 5:30 pm to rest in the local lodge. Pastor and Mingma Tenzing had used oxygen from C3 to the summit and back to C3. The other members of the second group used it from C3 to their high point to C2. Their Sherpas used it sleeping in C3, climbing from C4 to high points and down to C2. In the first group, the members were on oxygen from C2 to their high points to C2, but the guides on the team used it only from C3 to top to C3. The Sherpas used it in and from C4 to high point to and in C4 or, if they still had some left, down to C2. After Moniz and Chewang Lendu had summited Everest on the 26th, they moved from C4 down the Geneva Spur and up the West Face of Lhotse to a camp at Lhotse's C4 (7800m) that had been established on the 24th by other climbers. On 27 May, they left the camp at 2:00 am and reached Lhotse's summit at 5:55 am. They descended all the way to BC, where they arrived at 2:00 pm. A total of three members were on a Lhotse permit, Peter Ford, Ms. Kerrie McMartin and Moniz, but Moniz was the only one to actually try for the summit. McMartin went only as far as C2 about 8 May, was too tired to go any higher and went home. Ford got to C3 about 17 May, but the ropes had not been fixed all the way to the top; he had no time to wait and left the team on 19 May. Non-summiting Everest members: Lawrence Cann was too slow to go above 8475m in the first group's summit bid on 19 May. Mike Hamill went no higher than C3 because he got a virus infection on 17 May. John Heinle in early May got pulmonary edema in C2, was brought down to BC on oxygen, and left Nepal. Kevin Jones had gotten to C2, but when he returned to BC was diagnosed at the clinic as having a blood clot in his left leg and was evacuated by helicopter from BC in the third week of April. The diagnosis was confirmed in Kathmandu and he went home. David Markwell reached C3 on 24 May with the second group in occuping the camp, but got diarrhea and immediately retreated to BC and left the expedition. John O'Meara reached C3 on 17 May, but had a respiratory infection and left the expedition on the 18th. Brady Myers got above C2 on 8 May, but no ropes had been fixed above C3, and he was not willing to wait, so he went home. Karl Pettijohn got to 8350m on 19 May with the first group on their way to the summit, but was too slow to go higher. Eric Remza had a bad stomach ache, dropped out of the summit party at the Balcony (8500m) at 1:20 am on the 26th and returned to C4 alone. Greg Vernovage was leader of the second group, never went above BC. Jim Walkley reached C3 during the team's acclimatization period and descended to BC with the others, but he wasn't well and when they went back up about 19 May, he was unable to go above C2.
